This is an image I took last year at a company gathering, this man quickly pause for a snap allowing me to capture this amazing photo. I title this image “A Wrinkle in Time”, throughout my childhood I grew up without the presence of any of my grandparents really being their besides the first couple of years of my life. As time passed by and I grew older I began to realize the knowledge and stories behind the wrinkles. I challenge you the reader to take some time and meet someone of age and have a sit-down conversation for about 15 minutes. Most of them are filled with wonderful stories, experiences, knowledge that is just sitting there waiting to be told.
At times we are set back from greatness because of fear, we allow this four letter word to control or stop us from success. You beat yourself up when you live your life full of fear, you miss out on many great open opportunities. If you allow fear to dominate your mind you might never be at peace with yourself. Growing up there was always something stopping me from sharing my ideas, opinions, or bold actions. I call it FEAR, fear of rejection, fear of a bad idea, fear of failure, or fear of being laughed at.
One of my many experiences with fear comes from the lack of knowing. It all has a beginning and it must be tracked in order to break from it. Growing up with a single mother the majority of my life was very challenging. It was difficult for her to build me up as man if she was always working hard to provide for a family of five children. For years I would blame myself for the absence of my father. It was later in life when I realize that his decision for leaving was because of fear, fear of commitment, fear of discipline, fear of raising a family.
So I learned that you are always capable of doing what you believe in or sharing what matters most to you. Don’t let this word, FEAR, overpower your decision for your future, take some time to meditate and think back to moments that have stop you from pushing yourself forward.
Well, I believe that as you continue to grow and sharpen your skills in photography, you may dislike some of your photos and may even tell yourself that you could have done a better job. But, don’t let yourself discourage you! This is what I like to call your biggest competitor – yourself. The truth is that blasting your previous work and/or comparing your work, that is already magnificent, with other professionals or amateur artists could be quite saddening and heartbreaking. So, learn to recognize the work of others and possibly be inspired by it, and use it in a healthy manner, try not to compare your work to others in a way that diminishes what you do. It is always great practice to be open to learn from others while understanding that you are not the other person and our personalities, though processes, and ways of shooting are different. You were given a gift, a gift to enjoy, to capture art, people, music, action, nature, and anything that crosses your path. Don’t fall into drowning yourself with discouragement and some type of jealousy towards others and their work, instead take time to recognize your work as unique, special, and different. Photography has no right or wrong if it’s done purposely, so enjoy what you do and be happy with your work and remember that if you want to grow in this trade, you do it for yourself and to enjoy it, do it purposely and passionately, do it for love and not for money!
